Kitchen Tips and Tricks - how to clean your cast iron skillet - via Pinterest

Home alone and it's freezing outside, the snow is falling - what better to do then curl up on the couch with Pinterest.  My New Years plan was to get off the couch and start testing out some of the my pins. These are some no brainer kitchen tips and trips - seriously how did I not think of these???

We cook a lot in our cast iron skillet - it just taste better that way. Chicken, bacon, steaks, bacon, bacon.... seeing a pattern? But cleaning it is obviously not as fun as cooking with it. Until, thank you Martha Stewart and Pinterest, you can clean this baby with salt. And it works like a dream! Southern girls know you shouldn't clean your cast iron with soap and never ever ever put it in the dishwasher.

Via MarthaStewart.com - Here's the best way to clean cast iron: Scrub it with coarse salt and a soft sponge. The salt, a natural abrasive, absorbs oil and lifts away bits of food while preserving the pans seasoning. Rinse away salt and wipe dry.

Let's back up - before you can scrub your cast iron, you need to drain the fat from it (another new years resolution I'm still working on - less fat) Lovely thought huh - dispose of the fat swimming in your pan.. ugh. However it's another "why didn't I think of that" moment. Put aluminum foil in a bowl, pour the grease in. When it hardens, roll up the foil and throw it out!
